In this study, we aim to inspect the relationship between internalization of media appearance and adolescents' drive for thinness, and to further explore the mediating effect and moderating effect of the two mechanisms, specifically to investigate the mediating effect of appearance anxiety in the influence of internalization of media appearance on drive for thinness and the moderating effect of self-perceived physical attractiveness in the influence of internalization of media appearance on drive for thinness.

In this study, a questionnaire was used to survey 1343 students in a secondary school in Guangdong, using the following measurement instruments: the revised version of the Sociocultural Attitudes Toward Appearance Questionnaire-3, the Social Appearance Anxiety Scale, the Eating Disorder Inventory-Drive for Thinness Subscale, and the Body Attitudes Questionnaire-Attractiveness Subscale. The questionnaires were entered using EpiData, and the data were analyzed and processed using SPSS 24.0 and SPSS PROCESS macro programs. The results were as follows.

There were significant differences in Internalization of media appearance, appearance anxiety, drive for thinness and self-perceived physical attractiveness by gender, specifically, girls’ internalization of media appearance, appearance anxiety and drive for thinness were significantly higher than boys’, while self-perceived physical attractiveness was significantly lower than boys’.

There were significant positive correlations between internalization of media appearance, appearance anxiety and drive for thinness of high school students; there were significant negative correlations between self-perceived physical attractiveness and appearance anxiety and the tendency to lose weight.

Internalization of media appearance can significantly predict the drive for thinness of high school students, and the higher the degree of internalization of media appearance, the more severe the tendency to drive for thinness.

Appearance anxiety played a partial mediating role in the influence of internalization of media appearance on drive for thinness.

Self-perceived physical attractiveness moderated the mediating effect of appearance anxiety, specifically for individuals with low self-perceived physical attractiveness. In the mediating effect of internalization of media appearance on drive for thinness, the mediating effect of appearance anxiety was more significant in the first half and the second half.

Gender played a moderating role in the direct effect of internalization of media appearance on drive for thinness and the second half of the mediating effect of appearance anxiety. Specifically, for female adolescents, the direct effect of internalization of media appearance on drive for thinness was more significant, and  the second half of the mediating effect of appearance anxiety is also more significant than boys.

The results of this study suggest that there is a positive effect of internalization of media appearance on high school students' drive for thinness, and that appearance anxiety plays a mediating role, and self-perceived physical attractiveness plays a moderating role with gender.
